Loss of tissue and bone.
One of the possible consequences of radiotherapy is the atrophy of tissue and bone in the treated area. When the tissue dies, forming ulcers in the soft tissues of the mouth increases the size and produces pain or loss of sensation. The infection becomes a risk. As you lose bone and tissue, fractures occur. Preventive care reduces the severity of the tissue and bone loss.
The treatment includes the following:
* Follow a well balanced diet.
* Using devices or removable dentures as little as possible.
* Avoid smoking.
* Do not consume alcohol.
* Use topical antibiotics.
* Use painkillers.
* Surgery to remove dead bone or to reconstruct bones of the mouth and jaw.
* Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a method to administer oxygen under pressure at the surface of an injury to help with healing.
