Usually, the disease of the trenches begins suddenly with pain in the gums, a sense of general malaise and fatigue. It also causes halitosis (bad breath). The ends of the gums between the teeth are eroded and covered with a layer of gray dead tissue. The gums bleed easily and they hurt when eating and swallowing.
